  • 1813: The city of Buffalo, New York is burned by British soldiers during the War of 1812.
  • 1816: Several treaties are proclaimed in the area of St. Louis, Missouri between the United States government and the Ottawa, Potawatomi and Ojibwa Indian tribes. These are collectively known as the Treaty of St. Louis.
  • 1825: The U.S government and the Shawnee Nation proclaim The Treaty of St. Louis.
  • 1853: In order to make it easier to build a railroad through the Southwest, the U.S government buys land from Mexico in the Gadsden Purchase.
  • 1903: The Iroquois Theater in Chicago, Illinois catches fire. Over six hundred people are killed in the blaze. However, not all of the deaths were reported because some of them were removed from the scene.
  • 1936: The United Auto Workers has its first sit-down strike on this day.
  • 1972: The U.S Military stops heavy bombing in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
  • 2008: Saddam Hussein is put to death.
  • 2009: At the Forward Operating Base Chapman – a top facility run by the CIA in Afghanistan – a suicide bomber kills 9 people.
  • 2013: Anti-government troops attack key buildings in Kinshasa, Congo and more than a hundred people are killed as a result.
