• 1775: During the American Revolutionary War, Ethan Allen surrenders to the British after trying to capture Montreal during the Battle of Longue-Pointe.
• 1789: 12 amendments are added to the Constitution by the U.S Congress. These included the Bill of Rights, The Congressional Compensation Amendment and the never ratified Congressional Apportionment Amendment.
• 1846: Zachary Taylor leads United States troops to capture the Mexican city of Monterrey.
• 1890: Sequoia National Park is established by the U.S Congress.
• 1912: Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is created in New York City.
• 1915: The Second Battle of Champagne starts during WWI.
• 1944: Remnants of the British 1^st Airborne Division withdraw from Arnhem in the Netherlands. This concludes the Battle of Arnhem and Operation Market Garden.
• 1956: The first transatlantic underwater telephone cable system is inaugurated on this day—it’s called TAT-1.
• 1957: United States Army troops integrate Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
• 1977: Over 4,000 people take part of the first running of the Chicago Marathon on this day.
• 1978: A Boeing 727 (PSA Flight 182) collides with a Cessna 172 and crashes in San Diego, California. Approximately 144 people are killed.
• 1981: Belize joins the U.N.
• 1992: NASA launches the Mars Observer on this day. This $500 million dollar probe is the first United States’ mission to Mars in 17 years. Unfortunately, the probe would fail approximately a year later.
