Going to the pumpkin patch may be one of the most exciting trips of the fall season, especially for children. At a pumpkin patch, people can venture out into a field of ripe pumpkins, and select the pumpkin they like the best to carve into a Jack O’Lantern. As pumpkins grow to be many different lengths and widths, each pumpkin will almost have its own “personality”. Some pumpkins are very round, almost spherical, while others are longer and skinny. The pumpkin a person chooses usually depends on what design they are going to carve that year.
Sometimes, getting to the pumpkin patch is half of the fun! Some farms have hayrides that travel down windy paths lined with beautiful autumn trees. A hayride is usually a cart or buggy, lined with square bales of hay for sitting on. The cart will be pulled by a tractor or by horses.
Another great item that is often found at pumpkin patches are apples. Some pumpkin patches might have apple orchards, where people can go and pick their own apples. Other patches might have old-fashioned apple cider presses, where people can watch apple cider being made from crushing apples. Some pumpkin patches will have ingredients set out for people to make caramel apples. These ingredients can include caramel, chocolate, candy sprinkles, pecans, gummy bears and many others.
Finally, who can forget corn mazes? A corn maze will usually be made by a tractor that cuts down dead stalks of corn in a field of corn that has already been harvested for the season. The corn will be cut down in such a way that it forms a maze. The maze will then provide hours of fun for people as they try and find their way to the end. Corn mazes can greatly vary in size from a few acres to more than forty acres.
The Great Pumpkin Patch (Charlie Brown) – Probably the most famous pumpkin patch of all is that from the Fall Classic “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!”. In the storyline, Linus and Sally skip the Halloween festivities, and wait in a nearby pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin to rise and visit. Unfortunately for poor Linus and Sally, the Great Pumpkin never shows up, and Linus ends up falling asleep outside in the cold pumpkin patch. At the end of the show, Linus’s older sister Lucy wakes up and remembers to get Linus and put him into bed.
