On this day people around the world do just as the name of the holiday suggests – that is they talk like pirates. Talk Like A Pirate Day is not a floating holiday and is held every year on September 19. Talk Like A Pirate Day is held in many countries around the world, including but not limited to Australia, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Talk Like A Pirate Day was established by two friends, John Baur and Mark Summers. According to the official website, the idea came to the two friends as one of them had gotten injured during a racquetball match. The injury caused one of them to shout out “Arrrr!!” As the two continued to play, they began shouting out pirate slang and had tremendous fun with it. This occurred on June 6, 1995. As the two did not want to have the holiday on the same day as D-Day, they decided to hold it on September 19. The pair had a friend, Brian that reminded them about the event on a yearly basis. Without Brian, it is likely that the holiday would have been forgotten about in its infancy.
The idea did not really grow until the trio sent it to Dave Barry, the famous syndicated columnist, in 2002. Dave Barry published the column and since then the holiday has caught on fire and taken hold.
