National Day in Bahrain
National Day is a holiday observed in Bahrain annually on the 16th of December. This holiday commemorates Bahraini independence from the British in 1971. Although Bahrain declared its independence from Great Britain on August 15 of that year, the holiday is celebrated on December 16th to coincide with when the late Emir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa took the throne in 1961.
This day is enthusiastically celebrated with a variety of events including contests, cultural events, firework displays, and exhibitions. It is also traditionally the day when the Bahraini government announces new civil projects to the general public.
The History of National Day in Bahrain
Bahrain is an archipelago made up of Bahrain Island and approximately 30 smaller islands. The name of this country comes from the Arabic term “Al-bahrayn,” which means “Two Seas.” This country had been a British protectorate since the mid-19th century, and this was the case until 1971.
In 1961, Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa was made the first Emir of Bahrain until his death, succeeding his father—Salman ibn Hamad. On August 15, 1971, Bahrain gained its independence from the United Kingdom and underwent a massive economic transformation that transformed the country into one of the key financial centers in the Persian Gulf. Since all of this happened during the 38-year reign of Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the date he ascended the throne is when National Day is celebrated every year.
