  • 1837: Abolitionist printer Elijah P. Lovejoy is killed by a mob in Alton, Illinois as he was trying to protect his printing shop from being destroyed again. It had previously been destroyed on two previous occasions.
  • 1861: General Ulysses S. Grant overtakes a Confederate camp in Belmont, Missouri but have to retreat when Confederate reinforcements show up.
  • 1893: The state of Colorado becomes the second state in the United States to give women the right to vote.
  • 1900: In Cuba, the People’s Party is founded.
  • 1941: While evacuating the wounded and refugees, the Soviet hospital ship Armenia is attacked and sunk by German planes. It’s been estimated that 5,000 people died in the attack.
  • 1944: Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected for a fourth term as President of the U.S.A
