Armed Forces Day in Liberia

Celebrated as a national holiday in the Republic of Liberia, Armed Forces Day is a day that commemorates the soldiers who have served their country faithfully and is observed on February 11th each year. Every year on this date, the President of the Republic of Liberia declares February 11th as Armed Forces Day to be observed by the entire nation.

This proclamation highlights the importance of the armed forces in protecting its people from foreign aggression and upholding the constitution of Liberia. Because it is a national holiday, schools and most businesses are closed, as are government offices.

The History of Armed Forces Day in Liberia

The Armed Forces of Liberia came into existence on February 6, 1908. Before that date, the country protected itself using armed militia. The first military force of the country was the Liberia Frontier Force, but that name was later changed to the Armed Forces of Liberia.

A holiday that officially recognized the armed forces in Liberia, however, did not come into existence until 1957. This is when the Liberian legislature passed Armed Forces Day—a holiday that is observed on February 11th and is recognized as a national holiday throughout Liberia.
