Independence Day in Maldives

Independence Day in the Maldives is observed annually on July 26th. As the name suggests, this holiday commemorates the country’s independence from Britain on this date in 1965. Originally, the Maldives was a protectorate of Great Britain when the Sultan agreed to give up the sovereignty of the nation for military protection.

Under this arrangement, Great Britain also had to be consulted on certain matters of state in the Maldives. This changed when the islands received their independence, and the country finally had control over its own affairs and military defense.

The History of Independence Day in the Maldives

When the Sultan of the Maldives agreed to give up the islands’ sovereignty in exchange for military defense, the Maldives became a British protectorate on December 16, 1887. They would remain a protectorate until an agreement was signed between the Maldives Prime Minister and the British Ambassador that ended the Maldives’ time as a British protectorate. This occurred on July 26, 1965, and this day has been celebrated as a holiday ever since.
