Odie Day

Odie Day is a holiday that’s observed annually on August 8th. As the name of this day suggests, this is a day to celebrate the character Odie. Who is Odie? Well, he is the fictional puppy from the Garfield comic that was created by Jim Davis. In the comics, this dog is often characterized as a loveable but also very gullible animal.

This prompts Garfield to take advantage of him through various situations and to play pranks on him. Although Garfield is the character that often steals everyone’s attention, Odie is also a character that deserves some more attention than he currently receives.

The History Of Odie Day

Odie Day was invented to celebrate the date when Odie first appears in the Garfield comic strip in 1978. This is the date when Odie was brought to live with Jon Arbuckle and Garfield, his cat. This date is also considered to be Odie’s birthday, and many of his fans celebrate it as such.

Some Pretty Fun Facts About Odie

We simply can’t have a discussion of Odie Day without taking the time to learn more about Odie. And frankly, we wouldn’t want to. So, we rolled up our sleeves, served ourselves a plate of lasagna, and did a little bit of research on this iconic dog. The following facts are what we uncovered during our research.

  • Odie is supposed to be a wire-haired dachshund/terrier mix.
  • Odie has several alteregos. These include the Amazing Flying Dog and Odieboy.
  • In early comic strips, Odie was given to Jon by his roommate Lyman. Later,  the comics would say that Jon adopted him from a vet.

Observing Odie Day

There are a variety of ways that people can observe Odie Day. They can bake a cake for this fictional character, they can spend the day reading the Garfield comic strip or one of the full-length Garfield movies, or simply by learning more about Odie and his antics.

It’s also a good day to spread the word about this holiday online using the hashtag #OdieDay on social media.
