Scented Candle Day

Scented Candle Day is a holiday observed annually on the 1st of November, encouraging everyone to consider scented candles for their homes and/or offices.

These candles are known to have a relaxing effect that has only recently been explained by science. It appears that the scent provided by these candles stimulates the human limbic system—a part of the brain that handles emotions and memory.

This stimulation can cause the release of mood-regulating neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, calming a person down and causing their body to relax. Everyone should try to observe this holiday when it comes around and see if these candles have a relaxing effect on them.

The History of Scented Candle Day

It is believed that the ancient Egyptians were the first to use wicked candles around 5,000 years ago. They made these candles by taking rolled papyrus and repeatedly dipping it in melted beeswax or tallow until the candle was completely formed. These candles were then used in religious ceremonies, for lighting homes, and for traveling at night.

During the Middle Ages, tallow candles were used heavily, but they had a major drawback: they produced tons of smoke. Beeswax candles, introduced during this time, burned cleaner and without all the smoke, but they were available only to the wealthiest individuals and the clergy.

Few advances occurred in candle technology from the 13th century through the 18th century, but significant advances began happening during the 19th century. This is when French chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul discovered how to extract stearic acid from animal fatty acids. This discovery led to the creation of stearin wax, a type of wax that burned cleaner than either tallow or beeswax. Also, during this time, paraffin was introduced.

We are unsure exactly when scented candles were invented, but we know they began to become popular in the 1980s. Now, scented candles are extremely popular and sold all over the world. As for when Scented Candle Day was created, we are not quite sure. All we know is that it is a holiday that was invented sometime after 2015.
