Syrian Independence Day is a holiday that’s observed every April 17th. It commemorates the day in 1946 when Syria managed to gain its independence from France. Ever since this fateful event, the citizens of Syria have celebrated their independence from foreign influence.
On this day, the Syrian flag is hoisted high and there are parades and firework displays for people to enjoy. Since this holiday is a public one and a very important one in Syria, it’s also a day off for most people. Government offices, schools, and most businesses are also closed on this day.
The History Of Syrian Independence Day
Up until WWI, Syria was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. When the empire collapsed, Syria would then come under the control of France thanks to the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916. The rule of France over Syria would become recognized by the League of Nations in 1920.
Over the years, the Syrians would organize numerous uprisings including the Great Syrian Revolt in 1925, but true independence would remain out of Syria’s reach until 1941. This is when Syria proclaimed its independence. However, French troops wouldn’t officially leave the country until April 17, 1946. And this is why Syrian Independence Day is observed on the 17th of April.
