Independence Day in Syria

Syrian Independence Day is a holiday observed every April 17th. It commemorates the day in 1946 when Syria gained its independence from France. Ever since this pivotal event, the citizens of Syria have celebrated their freedom from foreign influence.

On this day, the Syrian flag is hoisted high, and there are parades and fireworks displays for people to enjoy. Since this holiday is public and very important in Syria, it is also a day off for most people. Government offices, schools, and most businesses are closed on this day.

The History of Syrian Independence Day

Up until World War I, Syria was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. When the empire collapsed, Syria came under the control of France, thanks to the Sykes-Picot Agreement of 1916. The rule of France over Syria was recognized by the League of Nations in 1920.

Over the years, Syrians organized numerous uprisings, including the Great Syrian Revolt in 1925, but true independence remained out of Syria’s reach until 1941. This is when Syria proclaimed its independence. However, French troops did not officially leave the country until April 17, 1946. This is why Syrian Independence Day is observed on April 17th.
