Umbrella Cover Day
We’ve been researching and covering holidays for a long time and we believed that we couldn’t be surprised anymore. However, we were wrong. We have found a new holiday that we would’ve never thought that we’d run across in a million years. A holiday that’s dedicated to umbrella covers.
Yes, someone invented a holiday that’s dedicated to the covers that people place over their umbrellas. This holiday is observed every July 6th and is called Umbrella Cover Day. Now, we can finally say that we’ve seen everything in the world of holidays. Everyone looking to celebrate their umbrella cover now finally has a day to do it on.
The History Of Umbrella Cover Day
Umbrellas have been around since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians used them for protection from the sun and the elements. Umbrellas were also common in Syria, China, and Greece as well. For much of its history, the umbrella didn’t change a whole lot either.
It basically remained the same tool for thousands of years. It wasn’t until the 20th century that major changes began to be made to the basic design. In 1928, the foldable pocket umbrella was invented by Hans Haupt.
And that’s just one of the many changes that were incorporated into the umbrella. Unfortunately, we don’t know who invented the umbrella cover. We’re sure it too was probably invented sometime during the 20th century. Fortunately, we do know when Umbrella Cover Day was invented.
This holiday was created in the mid-1990s after The Umbrella Cover Museum was founded on Peaks Island, Maine by Nancy 3. Hoffman — who would become the Director and Curator. This was around 1996 and Umbrella Cover Day was invented shortly thereafter.
Observing Umbrella Cover Day
Obviously, a trip to the Umbrella Cover Museum is a great way to observe this holiday. However, we do understand that not everyone will be able to take a trip to Maine.
Fortunately, they have virtual exhibitions that people can check out on umbrellacovermuseum.org. People can also spread the word about this holiday using the hashtag #UmbrellaCoverDay online.
