We Love Memoirs Day

We Love Memoirs Day is a holiday observed annually on August 31st. It encourages people to read some of the many memoirs that have been published over the years or even take the time to pen their own memoir.

Celebrities, politicians, religious leaders, and community organizers around the world have published memoirs, and many of these are well worth a read and can enlighten us about certain aspects of these people’s lives.

One of the most famous memoirs of all time is the memoir of Anne Frank, entitled “The Diary of a Young Girl.” If a person reads only one memoir for this holiday, then this is the one they should read.

The History of We Love Memoirs Day

Two memoir writers, Victoria Twead and Alan Parks, created this holiday on August 31st, 2013. They wanted to create a holiday where memoir writers and memoir readers could come together and have a heartfelt discussion on the subject of memoirs.

Victoria Twead is a New York Times bestselling author known for “Chickens, Mules, and Two Old Fools,” and Alan Parks is known for “Seriously Mum, What’s an Alpaca?” Their attempt to foster a community around memoirs worked, and people from all over the planet come together to share their love for memoirs.

This is not a holiday for memoir authors to advertise or push their work onto other people but is instead a day for a warm exchange of ideas between people. And for the most part, that has worked. That’s why it has been observed ever since it was first created.

Some Quick Facts About Memoirs

We wanted to leave our readers with some information about memoirs that might help them in their observance of this day. That’s why we gathered the following facts and listed them below. We hope these facts help people get greater enjoyment out of this day.

  • A memoir is merely the creative nonfiction of a person talking about their own life or a portion of their life.
  • All a person needs to write a memoir is a piece of time that they have lived. That’s it.
  • A memoir is designed to preserve the view and the experience of the author.
  • A well-written memoir can help a person with their own journey of discovery.
