The History of Constitution Day in the Marshall Islands
In 1943, the Marshall Islands were invaded by Allied forces, and by 1944 they were completely occupied. When WWII ended, the U.S. was given administrative power over the Marshall Islands, and the islands were used for nuclear weapon testing. On May 1, 1979, the Constitution of the Marshall Islands was signed, and it became a self-governing country. Three years later, it changed its name to the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
