Health Day in Turkmenistan

For most of the world, the 7th of April is celebrated as World Health Day. In Turkmenistan, however, it is celebrated as Health Day and it is a public holiday. The holiday encourages citizens of the country to take their health into their own hands by getting enough exercise, eating right, and controlling underlying conditions such as diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure.

The History Of Health Day In Turkmenistan

The origin of this holiday can be traced back to just after World War II. This is when the World Health Organization (WHO) held the first health assembly in 1948.

This health assembly would convene every year to discuss topics related to public health, and in 1950, they decided to make the 7th of April of every year World Health Day. It began to be celebrated by countries all across the world, including Turkmenistan.

Since this is a public holiday in Turkmenistan, most people have the day off. It is also a holiday on which businesses, schools, and government offices are closed. This allows the citizens of the country to engage in healthy activities.

One of the main activities observed in the country is a bike marathon that happens each year. In some areas, there are so many cyclists on the roads that it can be hard for local traffic.

Of course, cycling isn’t the only way this holiday is celebrated. People also celebrate it in a number of other ways, including running marathons, hiking, or engaging in other outdoor activities. There are also seminars that exhibit the importance of people taking their health seriously to avoid serious diseases such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and cancer.
