National Nutrition Month

Good health begins with good food, and that’s why doctors are always so interested in a person’s diet when they’re crafting their individual health plan. Poor nutrition can lead to all kinds of health problems, so it’s important for everyone to think about the nutrition that exists in the foods they eat.

And the perfect time to do this is in March during National Nutrition Month. This is a month for everyone to take stock of their diet and find out if it needs to be improved in some way by adding more nutritious foods into the mix.

The History of National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month was created in March 1973 as National Nutrition Week. It was a week created to raise the public’s awareness about the importance of nutrition and how they could improve their day-to-day diets. It was also used as a week to promote the field of dietetics. Over the years, the scope of the week began to grow, and it would eventually become an entire month dedicated to nutrition.

Some Tips for Improving Nutrition

Even though the main focus of this article is on National Nutrition Month, its history, and how it’s celebrated, we still thought it might be worthwhile to include a section on how people can improve their nutrition. That’s why we’ve listed some tips about this subject below.

However, we need to state that we aren’t doctors and that we aren’t giving medical advice. We feel everyone should talk with their doctor about their diet and their specific needs. The following tips are only for general knowledge and aren’t meant to be taken as medical advice. With that said, let’s dig into them.

  • Whole grain bread is a better option than white bread.
  • Cooking more at home can allow people to avoid some of the extra calories that many restaurants pack into their meals.
  • Cutting out sugary drinks can lead to better health and reduce a person’s risk of developing diabetes.

Observing National Nutrition Month

The first thing a person should do during this month is to take a good hard look at their diet and how they can improve it. Above, we’ve listed some tips that will help everyone do just that. During National Nutrition Month, people might also want to learn more about the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. And third, people might want to spread the word about this month using the hashtag #NationalNutritionMonth.
