National Secondhand Wardrobe Week
National Secondhand Wardrobe Week is observed during the second week of February, and as the name implies, it’s dedicated to secondhand clothing. During this week, people are encouraged to support their local thrift stores and buy some secondhand apparel. Why should a person buy secondhand clothing when they can buy brand-new clothing?
Well, there are several reasons why buying secondhand might be preferable to buying new, and we’ll list a few of them. Buying used clothing reduces a person’s impact on the environment, saves a lot of money, and allows people to wear vintage clothing that’s more authentic than the faux-vintage clothing that’s in style nowadays.
Some More Reasons To Buy Secondhand Clothing
We’ve already gone through some of the reasons why a person might want to purchase secondhand clothing (they’re inexpensive, they’re eco-friendly, and they provide an authentic vintage look), but those are not the only reasons to buy secondhand. We’ve included a few more reasons below for everyone who might need a little bit of extra incentive to buy secondhand clothing.
- They’re often better made and last longer than new clothing.
- It helps reduce the demand for fast fashion.
- It reduces the demand for sweatshop labor.
- They reduce the load on landfills.
Observing National Secondhand Wardrobe Week
More than likely, there are several different secondhand stores within a car’s drive of most people’s homes, so they can use this week to scout out some of the ones with which they aren’t familiar. They can walk inside and see what they have and what they don’t.
Once a person knows what secondhand stores are near them and what they offer, they can use the rest of the week to score exciting vintage clothing. People who manage to get cool vintage items might then want to take a picture of their bounty and post it on social media using the hashtag #NationalSecondhandWardrobeWeek.
