Own Business Day

Own Business Day is a holiday observed annually on the second Tuesday of October. Also known as I Own My Own Business Day, this holiday shines a spotlight on individuals who work tirelessly for themselves. It’s dedicated to those who own their businesses and acknowledges them for all their hard work.

Entrepreneurs are the backbone of any country and help keep the economy rolling by providing valuable goods and services and by offering employment to those in need of work. That is why we encourage everyone to thank small business owners for their dedication and hard work on this day.

The History of Own Business Day

We know that METRO AG created Own Business Day, and we do know that this holiday was first observed on October 11th, 2016. On that day, 20,000 participating businesses celebrated together. The following year, the celebration of this holiday was even bigger—with approximately 100,000+ businesses participating in 24 different countries.

We also know that the second Tuesday of October was chosen as the date to observe this holiday for several reasons. One, that date was chosen because it is free of bank holidays in most countries. Two, the day was selected because it is not a busy workday for most businesses.

Observing Own Business Day

On this day, businesses around the world offer a variety of specials that people can take advantage of. All a person has to do is look around for some of the deals. Businesses can choose to participate in this holiday as well if they are not already doing so.

Finally, people can spread the word about this holiday using the hashtag #OwnBusinessDay on social media. This is a great day for business owners to celebrate their successes and for those considering starting their own businesses to take the leap.
