Celebrated annually on November 1st by vegans all over the globe, World Vegan Day is a day to commemorate and advocate for the vegan lifestyle. According to many prominent vegans, the vegan lifestyle offers a wide-range of benefits for human health, protects the well-being of animals and helps protect the environment.
History of World Vegan Day
On November 1st, 1944, Donald Watson called a meeting of 5 other non-dairy vegetarians that he knew to discuss non-dairy vegetarian diets. As such, they founded a new movement that would be eventually called the vegan lifestyle. Over the years, they clarified the definition of their vegan diet and in 1979, it became a charity. In 1994, on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Vegan Society, a day to commemorate and promote the vegan lifestyle was proposed by Louise Wallis – who was chair of the society at the time. Since then, World Vegan Day has been used to celebrate and promote the vegan lifestyle.
As of 2017, there have been a number of different celebrities who have openly come out in favor of the vegan lifestyle. Some of these include Ellen Page, Jessica Chastain, Alicia Silverstone, Ellen DeGeneres, Ariana Grande, James Cromwell, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Joan Jett, Mayim Bialik, Bellamy Young, Daniella Monet, Casey Affleck, Dawn Richard, Russell Simmons, Stevie Wonder, Pamela Anderson, Peter Dinklage, James Cameron and Kate Mara.
