Kuan Yin’s Birthday

Kuan Yin, also known as Guan Yin, is the bodhisattva of infinite compassion found in East Asian Buddhism. Her name translates to “Observing the Sounds of the World” and describes her ability to listen to pleas from people so that she can help the needy. Every year, her birthday is celebrated with three annual birthdays, but it’s only the second one that concerns us right now.

This is Kuan Yin’s Birthday that’s celebrated in Taiwan on the 19th day of the 6th lunar month. This auspicious event marks her initiation into Enlightenment. The placement of her birthday on the lunar calendar means that on the Gregorian calendar, it can fall anywhere from the beginning of April to the end of March—depending on the year.

Kuan Yin was originally worshiped as the male bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara in India and was the personification of kindness and compassion prior to the Song Dynasty in China. By the 12th century, she was interpreted as a female form—depicted as a white-robed woman.
