National Animal Safety And Protection Month

National Animal Safety and Protection Month is observed during October and serves as a reminder that it’s important for us to protect the animals in our care. It’s designed to raise awareness about our responsibility toward our pets’ well-being and how it’s humanity’s responsibility to protect endangered species.

This month also encourages people to prepare themselves to protect their pets during natural disasters or other emergencies. And while we’re looking after the health and well-being of our own pets, we can spread the word about this month so that everyone can participate and give pets the respect they deserve.

The History of National Animal Safety and Protection Month

Although we’re unsure of the exact year this month was created, we’re pretty confident that it was established by the PALS Foundation. This foundation was established to help animals and human beings coexist on this planet in a more mutually beneficial way. Before that could happen, though, humanity has to realize that the fate of many animals rests in their hands.

Important Facts About Animal Safety

Some people may read what we’ve written about animal safety and not fully understand where we’re coming from or what we’re trying to convey. That’s okay. We’ll take a different approach. Below are some facts about animal safety that we feel will inform everyone on the subject so they can be better pet owners.

  • Wildlife trafficking generates up to $23 billion annually. This results in biodiversity loss and places many animal species at risk of extinction.
  • The white rhinoceros is now nearly extinct due to poaching for their horns.
  • As of 2022, there are two northern white rhinos left, but both are female.
  • To avoid conflicts between livestock and wild animals, the United States government killed over 1.2 million animals in 2019.
  • Some of the animals killed by the U.S. government because they were considered a nuisance include bears, wolves, and coyotes.

Observing National Animal Safety and Protection Month

During this month, it’s especially important to show your pets the love and respect they deserve. It’s also a good time to incorporate the needs of your pet into your family emergency plan.

Many people keep emergency supplies that include food and water for family members in case of a natural disaster, but fewer people keep emergency supplies for their pets. This month is the time to change that and to help ensure that your pet is well protected. Also, during this month, you can use the hashtag #AnimalSafetyAndProtectionMonth on social media.
