National Panini Month

The word “panini” means “small bread,” but we’re unsure why the sandwich that so many people love has that name. Sure, a panini is made with smaller bread, but this sandwich has more going for it than its bread size. It’s also a grilled sandwich that can take a variety of different forms.

Although in Italy, it’s usually made with michetta, ciabatta, or rosetta bread, in many other countries it can be made with just about any type of bread. The ease of obtaining the ingredients necessary to make it, and how it is cooked, probably explains a lot about why it’s so popular—especially in the U.S. How popular is it?

It’s so popular that August is now observed as National Panini Month, a month that encourages everyone to make one of these fine sandwiches.

The History of National Panini Month

In 2008, this month was created by Sargento Foods, an American company that was founded in 1953 and is known for its line of cheeses. Which makes sense if you think about it. After all, what would a panini be without melty cheese on it?

A Quick History of the Panini

Anyone who has ever wondered where the panini came from is going to be very pleased with this section of the article. That’s because we’re going to do a deep dive into the history of the panini—a history that goes back to the 16th century.

It’s believed that panini sandwiches originated in Lombardy, Italy, as a lunch meal for workers during the 16th century. And that would make sense considering that these sandwiches were easy to make and carry.

Over the next few hundred years, it would remain a well-kept Italian secret. However, in the 1970s, these sandwiches began to become popularized in the U.S., and the rest is, as they say, history.

Observing National Panini Month

Before a person can observe National Panini Month, they first have to have what they need to make a quality panini. This usually includes some form of bread (we prefer crusty bread ourselves), some meat, and some cheese.

Most people say that a panini press is also a necessary component, but we disagree. Sure, a panini press makes it easier to make one of these delicious sandwiches, but if one is not available, then a cast-iron pan can be used to apply the necessary pressure to the sandwich as it cooks.

Once all of the necessary ingredients are obtained, it’s then time to make this sandwich. Although a modern panini is usually made with focaccia or ciabatta and stuffed with mortadella, salami, ham, and cheese, just about any ingredients can be used in one of these sandwiches.
