  • 1842: Notre Dame University is established.
  • 1863:S President Abraham Lincoln declares the final Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day. From 1941 on, the holiday would appear on the fourth Thursday of each November.
  • 1917: The NHL (National Hockey League) is founded. The first teams are the Montreal Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers, the Quebec Bulldogs, the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Arenas.
  • 1922: Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon enter the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. They become the first people to enter the tomb in over three thousand years.
  • 1942: Casablanca premiers in New York City. This movie stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman and was written by Julius J. Epstein, Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch and was based on a play Murray Burnett and Joan Alison.
  • 1943: The German Luftwaffe attack the HMT Rohna by air and sinks her in the Mediterranean, just north of Béjaïa, Algeria during World War II.
  • 1944: A Woolworth’s shop in London, England is hit by a V-2 rocket launched by Germany during WWII. Almost 170 people are killed.
  • 1944: Germany begins a campaign of V-1 and V-2 attacks on Antwerp, Belgium during WWII.
  • 2004: 8 people are killed and 4 others are seriously wounded when a man begins stabbing people at a school dormitory in Ruzhou, China.
  • 2004: In the Maui Bird Conservation Center in Olinda, Hawaii, the last Poʻouli – otherwise known as a Black-faced honeycreeper bird – dies. The species is presumed to be extinct.
  • 2011: Traveling to Mars with the Curiosity Rover, the Mars Science Laboratory is launched.
