Sustainable Gastronomy Day

June 18th is observed annually as World Sustainable Gastronomy Day. This is a holiday that recognizes the practice of preparing food in an artful manner, but also using methods and techniques that are sustainable. It’s a cuisine that takes into account not only where the ingredients are from, but also how they are grown and prepared.

It’s an art form that allows people to make culinary masterpieces and do it without causing undue damage to the environment. That makes this holiday not only a delicious one but also one that is socially responsible. So everyone who wants to give their tastebuds a treat, but do it in a responsible way, is going to want to observe this holiday.

The History Of World Sustainable Gastronomy Day

This holiday was created in December 2016 when the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed World Sustainable Gastronomy Day as an international holiday. The first time it was observed was in December 2017 and it’s been a holiday that’s been observed ever since.

Observing World Sustainable Gastronomy Day

This holiday is under the direction of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, otherwise known as UNESCO. It’s also under the direction of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN General Assembly.

In UN Member States, these organizations develop partnerships with the designated Creative Cities of Gastronomy, and they promote clean energy use by restaurants. That is how this holiday is observed officially.

Ordinary citizens can also observe this holiday by making sure that they go to restaurants that work in a sustainable manner on this day, or by eliminating food waste in their own kitchens. They can also spread the word about this holiday using the hashtag #SustainableGastronomyDay on their social media feeds.

It’s also a good idea for people to think about how they should be cooking in a more sustainable manner. This can usually be done by making sure to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables, by properly rotating their food, and by composting when they can.
