Historical Events on July 30

  • 1729: The city of Baltimore in Maryland is founded on this date.
  • 1733: The first Masonic Grand Lodge in North America is founded in Massachusetts.
  • 1811: The Spanish execute Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in Chihuahua City, Mexico.
  • 1863: Native American tribal leaders and representatives from the U.S Government sign the Treaty of Box Elder during the American Indian Wars.
  • 1864: Battle of the Crater begins during the American Civil War as Union troops attempt to explode a large bomb under Confederate trenches.
  • 1865: A steamboat called Brother Jonathan sinks off the coast of Crescent City in California. Over two hundred and twenty-five people are killed.
  • 1866: In New Orleans, armed Confederate veterans riot against a meeting of Radical Republicans. Over 100 people are injured and 48 people are killed.
  • 1945: I-58 – a Japanese submarine – sinks the USS Indianapolis during World War II. Over 880 seamen will die over the course of the next 4-days. This is when an aircraft spots the survivors.
  • 1956:S President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a joint resolution passed by the United States Congress that authorizes “In God We Trust” as a national motto.
  • 1965: The Social Security Act of 1965 is signed into law by United States’ President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act establishes Medicaid and Medicare.
  • 1969:S President Richard Nixon visits South Vietnam and meets with U.S military commanders as well as President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu.
  • 1971: David Scott, James Irwin and the Lunar Rover lands on the moon with the Apollo Lunar Module Falcon on this date.
