Global Dignity Day

Observed on the third Wednesday of October, Global Dignity Day is a holiday and an initiative that attempts to educate youth about their own self-worth. It’s a day for people to help the young people of the world reach their true potential by showing them compassion, kindness, tolerance, and understanding.

Every human being has the right to a dignified life, which means access to education, income, and security. It also means that human beings have the right to health, freedom, and the right to be independent. Unfortunately, too many children around the world aren’t being nurtured to their full potential, and we as a species can no longer allow that to happen.

The History of Global Dignity Day

This holiday was created by three people who were resolute in their belief that everyone deserves a life of dignity. These three people were Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, author and philosopher Pekka Himanen, and CEO and founder of Operation Hope, John Bryant.

They created this day in 2005 to make human dignity the powerful social change that society needs. Far too often, we’re separated by religion, politics, nationality, intolerance, war, and injustice when we should be united under the umbrella of human dignity.

Observing Global Dignity Day

This holiday is often observed by speakers going into classrooms and educating students on the concepts of dignity, self-worth, and acceptance. Students are encouraged to write letters to themselves outlining their goals and aspirations. They are also asked to reflect on their definition of the word dignity.

People can use the hashtag #GlobalDignityDay on social media. They can also visit globaldignity.org to view the toolkits and resources needed to teach dignity in classrooms. Everyone around the world is encouraged to observe this holiday and help the world become a more caring place where children can reach their full potential.
