  • 1836: Having defeated Mexican forces the day before at the Battle of San Jacinto, forces led by General Sam Houston identify that Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna is among the captives.
  • 1864: The United States Congress passes the Coinage Act of 1864. This act mandates that the inscription “In God We Trust” be on all of the coins minted as U.S currency.
  • 1876: Major League Baseball starts when a National League game is played at the Jefferson St. Grounds in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • 1889: At noon on this day, thousands of people rush to claim land in the Land Rush of 1889. In only a couple of hours, Oklahoma City is founded with a population of at least ten thousand people.
  • 1898: A Spanish merchant ship is captured by the USS Nashville on this day during the Spanish American War.
  • 1906: The 1906 Summer Olympics begins on this day in Athens, Greece.
  • 1915: Poison gas is once again released during the Second Battle of Ypres during World War I.
