World Refrigeration Day
World Refrigeration Day is a holiday that’s observed annually on June 26th and celebrates the creation of modern refrigeration technology. This technology has had a significant influence on modern society. It has not only made hotter climates more habitable but has also allowed for safer food storage and shipment.
It has even aided in the manufacturing of medicines and helped to make the Internet possible by keeping data centers at the proper operating temperatures. This technology has improved our lives so much; it’s no wonder a holiday was created to celebrate it. Now we can all take the time once a year to think about how refrigeration has improved our lives over the past few decades.
The History of World Refrigeration Day
Although modern technology has certainly made it easier to refrigerate things such as food, the process of refrigerating things has been done for thousands of years. During ancient times, snow and ice were carted down from mountains and placed in caves to preserve food and drinks.
Then something remarkable happened in the 19th century. The first practical refrigerating machine was invented in 1834 by Jacob Perkins. This was a vapor-compression refrigeration system. Over the years, different types of refrigeration systems were created, and each iteration improved on the technology.
This allowed refrigeration systems to help society out in a variety of different ways. Advanced refrigerators and air conditioning systems soon became everyday items. Needless to say, refrigeration ended up changing society in a big way.
As important as refrigeration was, however, it wasn’t until 2018 that someone would invent a holiday dedicated to it. Actually, if we’re being honest, it wasn’t an individual that created this holiday.
It was actually invented by the International Institute of Refrigeration. They created the holiday to promote the advancement of refrigeration technology and its many applications. The first year that this holiday was officially observed by the general public was on June 26th, 2019.
Observing World Refrigeration Day
Every year, a different theme is released for this holiday. In 2019, the theme was “Cold Chain 4 Life,” and it emphasized the importance of the cold chain in ensuring food quality and safety.
In 2020, the theme was “Refrigerants for Life,” and it celebrated air conditioning, refrigeration, and heat pump systems. In 2021, the theme was “Cooling Champions: Cool Careers for a Better World.” That theme focused on career opportunities in the air conditioning and refrigeration industries.
Of course, people don’t have to follow the annual themes of this holiday. They can take the time to celebrate it in their own way. They can write a poem for their refrigerator or pen a love letter to their air conditioning system.
They can also learn the history of air conditioning and refrigeration. And finally, they can spread the word about this holiday using the hashtag #WorldRefrigerationDay on social media.
