The History Of The Birthday Of The Governor Of Malacca
Malacca was initially founded by Singapura King Iskandar Shah as a fishing village in 1402. He choose the location because it had a good port, was easily accessible all year long, and was strategically located on the narrowest part of the Malacca Straits. With the help of the Orang Laut (also known as the sea people), he established Malacca as an international port and compelled passing ships to stop thereby establishing suitable facilities for trade and the warehousing of trade goods.
During the 16th century, Portuguese General and Duke of Goa, Alfonso de Albuquerque, set sail to Malacca with 18 ships and 1,200 men. The force conquered the city on August 24th, 1511. The Hindu, Burmese and Chinese inhabitants were spared, but the Muslim inhabitants were either sold into slavery or outright massacred. During this time, the Malay sultanate was abolished.
On April 1, 1946, Malacca became a part of the Malayan Union and that, in turn, became a part of the Federation of Malaya on February 1, 1948. On August 31, 1957, Malay became an independent state and in September of 1963, Malaysia was formed with Malaya being merged with Malacca, Sarawak, Singapore, and Sabah.
