  • 1799: In the Egyptian village of Rosetta, the Rosetta Stone is discovered by Captain Pierre-Francois Bouchard.
  • 1806: To explore the West, U.S Army Lieutenant Zebulon Pike leaves from Fort Bellefontain – around the city of St. Louis in Missour – on an expedition of exploration.
  • 1815: On board the HMS Bellerphon, Napoleon Bonapart surrenders during the Napoleonic Wars.
  • 1838: The Divinity School Address is delivered at Harvard Divinity School by Ralph Waldo Emerson. This speech – which denounced the divinity of Jesus and Biblical miracles – outrages the Protestant community.
  • 1862: The CSS Arkansas severely damages 3 Union ships but also takes quite a bit of damage herself.
  • 1870: Georgia becomes the last Confederate State to be readmitted into the Union on this date.
  • 1888: Mount Bandai erupts on this date. Approximately 500 people are killed in Fujushima, Japan.
  • 1916: Pacific Aero Products is incorporated by George Conrad Westervelt and William Boeing in Seattle, Washington. It would late be renamed Boeing.
  • 1918: The Germans strike during the Second Battle of the Marne during World War 2.
  • 1927: 89 protesters in Vienna by Austrian police forces. This day would become known as the Massacre of July 15th.
