Historical Events on January 25

  • 1787: Four rebels are killed and another twenty are wounded outside Springfield Armory during Shay’s Rebellion.
  • 1791: The old Province of Quebec is split into Upper and Lower Canada when the Constitutional Act of 1791 was passed by the British Parliament.
  • 1881: Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and the Anglo-Indian Telephone Company come to an agreement that forms Oriental Telephone Company. This company was licensed to sell phones in China, Japan, Greece, India, Turkey and South Africa.
  • 1915: The U.S transcontinental telephone service is inaugurated by Alexander Graham Bell as he speaks to Thomas Watson in San Francisco, California from New York.
  • 1937: The NBC radio serial “The Guiding Light” debuts on in Chicago on this date. In 1952, it’s moved to CBS TV and remains there until 2009. It’s considered the longest running soap opera of all time.
  • 1945: The Battle of the Bulge reaches its conclusion.
  • 1947: A patent is filed for a “”Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device” by Thomas Goldsmith Jr. It’s considered the first interactive game but can’t be considered the first video game because it only used analog parts.
  • 1949: The first ever Emmy Awards are presented at the Hollywood Athletic Club.
  • 1961: The first live presidential TV new conference is given by U.S President John F. Kennedy from Washington, D.C.
  • 1971: Charles Manson and three of his female followers are found guilty of the Tate-Labianca murders of 1969.
