America Day in Honduras

America Day is a holiday that’s observed annually in the Republic of Honduras on the 14th day of April. Also known as Pan American Day, this holiday commemorates the creation of the International Union of American Republics in 1890.

This was created at the First International Conference of American States to keep a level of cooperation between all of the member states including Honduras, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and other countries in the Americas.

The International Union of American Republics is now known as the Organization of American States (OAS) and it’s the world’s oldest regional organization.

The History Of America Day In Honduras

Once just about all of the nations of the Americas had liberated themselves from colonial rule, it became quite obvious that some degree of cooperation between these independent countries must be established. The only question was how much cooperation between countries would be beneficial to all of them.

To solve this problem, the First International Conference of American States was convened at the request of the U.S in Washington DC. This conference lasted from October 1889 through April of 1890 and considered a wide range of topics to find the policies that would promote the welfare and prosperity of all member states.

On April 14, 1890, the conference adopted a resolution that formed the Internation Union of American Republics—an organization that’s known as the Organization of American States today. The original member countries of this organization included Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia,   El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and the United States.
