Historical Events on June 13

  • 1774: Rhode Island is the first North American colony of Great Britain to ban the importation of slaves.
  • 1777: Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette arrives near the town of Charleston in South Carolina in order to help train American soldiers for the American Revolutionary War.
  • 1805: The Great Falls of the Missouri River are spotted by Meriwether Lewis and 4 of his colleagues who were scouting ahead of the main body of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
  • 1881: The USS Jeannette is trapped and crushed by Arctic Ocean ice pack on this day.
  • 1886: Fire rages across a good portion of Vancouver in British Columbia.
  • 1893:S President Grover Cleveland notices a patch of roughness in his mouth. It would turn out to be cancerous and he would undergo a secret surgery on the 1st of July to have it removed.
  • 1917: A German air raid on London is undertaken by Gotha G.IV Bombers. This bombing results in 120 adults being killed, over 40 children being killed and over 430 people injured.
  • 1927: Charles Lindbergh is given a ticker-tape parade down 5th in the city of New York, New York.
  • 1944: At the Battle of Villers-Bocage during World War 2, German tank commander Michael Wittmann
  • ambushes the 7th British Armored Division. As a result, 14 tanks are destroyed, as are 2 anti-tank guns and 15 personnel carriers.
  • 1944: Near Carentan, German forces start a counteroffensive against American forces.
  • 1944: Germany launches 11 V1 Flying Bomb attacks on England. Only 4 of them will hit their targets.
