  • 1824: The United States House of Representatives are charged with the task of deciding a winner of the U.S. Presidential election because no candidate received a majority of the electoral college votes. This is in accordance with the 12th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
  • 1834: With the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, slavery is outlawed in the Cape Colony.
  • 1862: During his State of the Union Address, U.S President Abraham Lincoln reaffirms the importance of ending slavery.
  • 1865: The first historically black university in the southern U.S – Shaw University – is founded on this day.
  • 1913: The moving assembling line is introduced by Ford Motor Company.
  • 1924: The first U.S based NHL hockey franchise – the Boston Bruins – plays their first league game at home.
  • 1941: The final approval to begin war against the U.S is given by Emperor Hirohito of Japan.
  • 1941: The Civil Air Patrol is created when New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia signs Administrative Order Nine.
  • 1955: An African-American seamstress named Rosa Parks refuses to give her seat up to a white man. As a result, she’ arrested for violation of Montgomery, Alabama’s segregation laws. Her arrest would lead to a bus boycott in that city and Rosa Parks would become an icon of the American Civil Rights Movement.
