  • 1562: The French Wars of Religion officially start when 63 Huguenots are murdered in Wassy, France.
  • 1565: Rio de Jeneiro is founded as a city on this day.
  • 1628: According to writs issued in February of 1628, today is the date that all towns must pay a ship tax in England. Previously only seaport towns had to pay a ship tax.
  • 1642: Georgeana, Massachusetts is officially incorporated as a city. This city – which is now known as York, Maine – is considered to be the oldest incorporated city in the U.S.
  • 1692: Tituba, Sara Good and Sara Osborne are brought in front of Salem Village’s local magistrate. This would be the beginning of the Salem Witch Trials.
  • 1781: The Articles of Confederation are adopted by the Continental Congress.
